I was trying to install Ubuntu 7.10 on a selection of Dell Latitude C510/C610’s yesterday. When I loaded the standard desktop install CD it kept coming up with the error Buffer I/O error on device fd0, logical block 0, then it would not be able to finish the install.
This was frustrating - but the solution was relatively simple. All you need to do is download and use the alternative installation which you can get here, and then for some reason that will work.
I looked for other causes of the problems and it has been claimed that it could also be if you use a multi-drive as opposed to a single purpose CD drive. However I did not find this was true in my situation!
So after several hours I now have Ubuntu running on a couple of laptops to take and give away in East Africa! Success!!
