Over at an article about Ads on GoDaddy Free Hosting we were asked:

… do you think ifreames effect the indexing of other pages on the site?

While a bot is crawling the page will it see the iframe first and crawl to it rather then crawl the rest of the page? More over, won’t this be harmful on large scale sites while trying to index inner pages?

Please any one let us know your thoughts …

Although I have not had any experience with iFrames on a site containing real content (I have used iFrames to display advertisements, but that’s about it) I got busy doing a bit of research and found that iFrames may not be indexed and displayed in the Google Search Results.

You can read what Google says about here below:

IFrames are sometimes used to display content on web pages. Content displayed via iFrames may not be indexed and available to appear in Google’s search results. We recommend that you avoid the use of iFrames to display content. If you do include iFrames, make sure to provide additional text-based links to the content they display, so that Googlebot can crawl and index this content.

That content is part of the the free help that Google offers to webmasters at their Webmaster Help Centre. You can read that answer, and more about using rich media files on your web-site here.

Web Workflow

All web developers seem to have a slightly different workflow. Last week I set out on a journey to increase my web development productivity. I’m currently using OS X Leopard 10.5.4 on a iMac 2.1GHz G5.

Coda

‘Coda‘, made by panic, is a ftp+text editor all in one. At first glance it appeared to be everything that I needed. It includes a built ftp client, css editor, subversion, Subetha Engine (which allows multiple people to edit a file collaboratively), and of course the editor. So I downloaded the 2 week trial and much to my surprise I was very impressed. The user interface is very nice and intuitive. New windows are opened up in tabs along the top (which I like but know others who hate that). Like most of these programs your remote/local file structure appears on the left side and the editor on the right. I got used to it very quickly. In fact my trial ran out 2 days ago and I have been struggling without it. The only downside is the $79 price tag, which is not a whole lot if this is what you do all day. I am a huge fan of open source, so I ventured off to find a free alternative. This is when I stumbled across the Smultron + Cyberduck marriage.

Note: If you’ve been trying to use coda with a mediatemple server and having problems with files not saving, make sure you’re using sftp. I’m not sure why this makes a difference but it it did for me. Files should upload quickly once you switch it over.

Coda Pros:

Well designed interface

Very intuitive

ftp built in

Collaborative editing of files

Coda Cons:

High price tag

Not as feature rich as something like ‘Textmate‘ for in depth web development

Smultron + Cyberduck

Smultron, made by Peter Borg, is a very simple but well designed text editor. It doesn’t have built in ftp so you will still need to use Cyberduck. I’m assuming most of you reading this will be well aware of Cyberduck, the free open source ftp client. Smultron fully integrates with Cyberduck allowing one click editing of any of your remote files from Cyberduck. Just use Cmd+s to save and your files are uploaded straight to your server. These two programs behave similar to Coda in this sense. The only downside being that you will have to use two programs to accomplish the same task. Smultron is a fairly basic editor and definitely doesn’t have some of the bells and whistles Coda has, but for the average coder it will do just fine. Remember this is the free solution so if your willing to put up with this you can pocket that $79 and take your wife/girlfriend out for dinner.

Smultron Cyberduck Pros:

Free

Open Source

Easy to use

Does what its supposed to best, edit text

Sumltron Cyberduck Cons:

File structure does not appear within Smultron

Cyberduck is prone to crashing (at least on my computer)

Conclusion

Well I’ve been fairly even with both sides at the moment. I’d have to say that if money wasn’t an issue I would definitely go with Coda. It’s ease of use and the fact that it’s an all in one package is very attractive. I like seeing my file structure along the left hand side, something that Smultron lacks (you have to go to Cyberduck to see this). Having said that I will continue to use my Smultron Cyberduck combo until I can convince my wife to skip a date night and put the money towards Coda.

What does your workflow look like? Let me know if you have better solutions. I would love to hear from people who have used Textmate, CSSedit, TextWrangler, or any other OS X friendly text editors or ftp clients.

You can hide the Google Ads on your personal page in Ning. Ning is a Social Networking platform where you can create your own Social Networking site. Well you could say it’s mean to hide the ads that will generate income for the creators and I sympathize with that but let me tell why I want to hide them. I joined a Social Networking created by a Christian Friend and during my first few visits I caught a few ads that were not quite appropriate for the content of the group, one of them being “Married Dating”, not sure I want to advertise that on a Christian Social Network – or anywhere else. Anyway excuses apart, here is how you do it (based on your own conscience).

Log on to your ning site and click on “My Page”

click on “Customize appearance”

Scroll down and click on the Advanced tab

add the following text to the textarea available

.xg_ads { height:0px; width:0px; }
.xg_module { background:#FAF7D8; }

change #FAF7D8 to the background color of your template – if you change the template you will need to change this line also

Done

Now you do this based on your own conscience, I’m just sharing my tips, Im’ not talking you into doing this .

Some people might question my integrity on this post but let me clarify. I was offered a free hosting ticket (free when I buy a domain name) by Godaddy with no mention of ads being added to my site, I only saw the ads after I installed a wordpress blog in my new free hosting. The ads have not ben removed, they still load and will still count as viewed on their stats, they are just hidden. Anyway if you want to hide your ads on a Godaddy free hosting..here is how you do it.

Add the following line to your CSS file #conash3D0 {height:0px; top:-1px;} – if this does not work just find the id of the iframe that loads the ads. (in my case the id is “conash3D0″)

Finding the ID

View the page’s source code (right-click / view source code)

scroll to the bottom of the source code and you should find a script calling the file https://a12.alphagodaddy.com/hosting_ads/gd01.js or something similar.

copy the .js file address to your address bar and you shoud be able to see the js code

look for the text iframe id=

after the = is the name (id) of that frame

Disclaimer: Do it according to your own conscience. Don’t blame me for any trouble you may have with the host.
Just great. It comes with a US only country limitation which is also very easy to modify. If you are a web developer you will have to test you web apps or sites on IE, specially because IE lives in it’s own little world but still a lot of people use it. Anyway, I came across this application IE4Linux which installs a minimalist version of Internet Explorer on your Linux. The applications runs on Wine and will run with the minimal functionality, just enough for testing. IE4Linux can be found at the project’s official website and if you don’t have Wine or don’t know what it is have a look here. With wine you can run several Windows applications on Linux, I don’t really advocate doing it but sometimes it helps with migration.

WordPress have just released version 2.3 and I have been playing with it on my personal blog.

I decided to try a test and do the equivalent of ‘non-techie’ install and ignore all their warnings about deactivating plugins and what not before upgrading in an attempt to see if anything broke. [Now, I had taken a FULL backup first - this was a test, remember!]

As it happened, everything upgraded just fine with all my plugins behaving themselves. Version 2.3 has quite a few changes both on the surface and under the hood. The main highlights for users being the integrations of tag management and theme widgitising, the addition of a ‘pending review’ publishing option, some text editing tweaks and some tidying up around URL and blogroll management. Full details of the changes can be found on their website.

It’s still early days, but so far I am very pleased with 2.3. What are some of your experiences?

With the ability to create your own blogsite using Wordpress being so easy these days, the rise of the plugin quickly interests those who want to add that certain amount of ‘polish’ to their site.

The little picture you see on your web browser or next to your list of favourites is, not surprisingly, called the ‘favicon’ and will be displayed whenever someone visits your page or bookmarks you.

By creating a 16×16 pixel favicon.ico file and placing it in your site you can, via a little bit of html, get it to appear quite easily. Wordpress has had instructions for this for some time, but now a little plugin from Digital Ramble helps those (like me!) for whom html is best left to others. This also has the benefit of not being theme dependent, so you don’t have to remember to keep editing your head.php file if you change themes regularly.

IE7 is now able to handle transparency on favicon and so you are not limited to having to completely fill a square block – you can let that creativity rumble. There is something cool and retro about having to design a 16×16 square of pixels to look good. Reminds me of when I had a Sinclair ZX Spectrum!

By the way, if you are ever stuck for ideas for your favicon, then visit favicon.co.uk where you can visit their gallery or even upload photos, pictures etc and let them have a go for you.
