Some guys out there will laugh and say, “clearly you need a gatekeeper for H323“, well that’s not my experience with the Sony equipment. Anyway, I saw it as an opportunity to learn something new and dove into setting up a simple gatekeeper. After some looking around I found the GNU Gatekeeper and got an old IBM e-server PIII and installed a pure Debian Linux distro which works beatifully on this old machine (FYI – with Gnome). Well without further ado, here are the steps I took:

1 – Downloaded and installed Debian Linux (using the netinstall version 34mb for the boot cd)

2 – Installed GNUGK easily with apt-get install gnugk (installs by default into /var/run/gnugk)

3 – Created the gatekeeper.ini file based on the tutorial on gnugk website (better to save it into folder /etc)

my gatekeeper.ini content

# main configuration

[Gatekeeper::Main]
Fortytwo=42
Name=GNUGK #put here any name you want for your gk

[GkStatus::Auth]
rule=allow

[RoutingPolicy]
h323_ID=dns,internal
002=neighbor,internal
default=explicit,internal,enum,dns,internal,parent,neighbor

GKRouted=1
H245Routed=1

[RewriteCLI] # change this according to your network
in:192.168.1.0/24=any=18001111
in:192.168.2.0/24=any=18002222
in:any=any=0

[LogFile] # creates log files and rotate them – in this case daily @ 23:00
Rotate=Daily
RotateTime=23:00

4 – restart gnugk with the following command (which can later be added to the startup runlevel)

gnugk -ttt -c /etc/gatekeeper.ini (-ttt will output lots of text and is good for finding any faults, but not essential for the functioning of the gk)
All done and I dialed to URL successfuly using my tandberg system.

I recently got a new blackberry 8800 and have been trying to get it to syncronize the data with my Thinkpad T60 (running XP Pro) via bluetooth. Mainly so that I do not have to carry a cable around with me all the time as that really defeats the object of having bluetooth in the first place!

After a lot of stuggles and trying to pair the devices in different ways, I found the following information on the blackberry website. It appears that you cannot use 3rd party bluetooth software such as the thinkpads have. You have to use the default Windows (at least SP2 on XP) bluetooth drivers. How you can easily tell if you are using 3rd party software is if you go to ‘My Computer’ and it says ‘My Bluetooth Places’ then it needs to be uninstalled. It is recommended that you see your computer’s manufacturers instructions on how to do this properly.

It is a bit of a pain that it does not just work with any 3rd party drivers – but such is life in the windows framework!

I have been having problems with a Canon I350 on a sony vaio running XP Professional – it keeps disconnecting and saying the printer is offline – even when it is clearly online. After checking all the connections no problem was apparent.

After further investigation it seems that the only solution is to delete the printer from the printers menu (found in the control panel). Then reinstall the printer following the insructions found on the canon website. But in a nut shell, all you do is load the printer drivers (found here) and when they are installed simply plug in the printer.

Once this is done the printer will work again….if you have any problems with this – leave a comment and I will see if I can help!

Tonight at 8:30 I got a call saying that the projector is not displaying the picture, it just continually searches for an input, going through Scart, VGA 1, VGA 2 and USB.

There are several things that you need to check that could be causing the problem.

Check that the cable is plugged into the correct socket – for VGA, it should go in the VGA in socket and connect to the corresponding socket in the laptop. If you are connecting from a scart socket (in a DVD player for example) or USB then the input on the projector should be labelled. If you are sure you have got it right and you are still getting no signal – check your vga cable and try swapping it cause that may be the problem.

Once the cable is plugged in to the correct socket on the computer and projector the project or should be searching for inputs – on many laptops you will need to tell the laptop to push the output to the correct place. The way to do this on most laptops is to press FN key and then one of the Funtion keys (F1-F12) at the top of your keyboard. Chances are that one of the keys will have something on it that says lcd/crt or an image that looks like 2 different screens. From here you can have the image display just on your computer, on the external screen or on both.

If you cannot find this option, once the laptop is connected to the projector you can go start>>control panel>>display>>settings and from there change the options. From this menu you can also do more advanced features such as splitting your screen between the laptop and projector.

The Microsoft Zune has had very limited success so far as a personal media player (PMP) and has had trouble competing with the Apple iPod. With the Microsoft Zune 2.0 however there is one feature that could blow the iPod out of the water and be one of the features needed to propel the Microsoft Zune 2.0 to success.

The new Microsoft Zune 2.0 is set to sync with Microsoft Windows Media Center. That doesn’t sound like much, after all the Apple iPod will sync with iTunes, but the killer is in the details.

Microsoft is setting it to sync your recorded tv shows from Windows Media Center to the Zune. So if you recorded your favourite episode of Australian Idol on your Windows Media Center computer you can sync it up with your Zune 2 for watching the next day.

And what might be the coolest feature is that you sync your Zune with your Microsoft Windows Media Center over WiFi!

That is an amazing feature that will make this new syncing feature even easier to use as you don’t even have to be in the same room as your Windows Media Center computer to sync up to your Zune 2.

Most versions of Microsoft Windows Vista now include the Windows Media Center so this feature will be available to most people getting a new computer, and those who purchased the original Windows Media Center. (Windows Media Center does not come with Windows Vista Basic or Windows Vista Business)

Over a week ago my boss had her printer (HP 2550Ln) suddenly stop working. I checked the warning light an it was the Imaging drum that needed replacing. I looked around and did some research and got to the approximate price of £ 90-something for a replacement. Well I looked at the last page printed on that printer and the quality was very good, actually it was as good as when the printer first arrived so I went to the HP website where I read about the Imaging Drum and how it works, interesting way of making money out of costumers.

The printer’s Imaging drum has a built in counter so after a X number of copies it stops working and needs to be replaced even if the quality is still great.

After looking around for a bit on the internet I found a site which gave me very simple instructions on how to reset a HP Imaging Drum for the models Laserjet 2550 2550L 2550Ln.

I did it and it worked, the printer is printing away with great quality. Please remember this is just a tip, do it at your own risk.

Click here for instructions on “Reseting HP 2550 Laser Printer Imaging Drum“.

Installing a network printer can sometimes seem like a big task but in reality it is not too difficult.

What you need to do is go to control panel and then choose the printers option. Then select add printers.

This is the part that can get a little tricky… Now choose a local printer and NOT a network printer, and then uncheck the box that says ‘Automatically detect and install my plug and play printer’. The reason that you do this is because you do not want your computer to search for a printer physically attached to your computer. Click next.

Then choose Create a new port – and select a ‘Standard TCP/IP Port.’

Then add the IP address of the printer in the top box then click next. the computer will either automatically install the drivers for the printer or ask you to direct it to the drivers – either using the CD or locating the driver on your network.

Ever since changing over our mail server our Xerox printer had been giving us Error Code 016-781. We have also not been receiving e-mails from our Xerox printer during this time.

The error code 016-781 means:

Cause – Could no connect to the server during the file forwarding by Scan Services

Remedy – Ask the network administrator to check the network environment or server environment

Since we can still print from our Xerox printer I know that machine is connected properly to the network. I am also still access the CentreWare Internet Services remote administration page on the printer.

To change the e-mail settings for your Xerox Printer in the Xerox CentreWare administration application you need to do the following:

log into the Xerox Centerware application

navigate to the “Properties” top tab

expand the “Protocol Settings” folder on the side

scroll down and then click on the “E-Mail” option

enter the valid SMTP Server Address

check the SMTP Port Number

confirm the Authentication Type being used by your mail server

enter the valid user name

enter the password

After you have put in the proper details you need to click on the “Apply New Settings” button on the bottom of the page to save the changes.

Now you should be able to send e-mails from your Xerox Printer to whatever e-mail addresses you define in the Job Templates.

When you choose a user name and password it is best to create a separate user name just for the printer so that the password is not changed. Our error code 016-781 came up because someone had changed the password on the user that I had set-up for the printer to use. I now have a separate user name and unchangeable password set-up on my mail server for our Xerox printer.
