I recently needed to transfer about 400 vcards into one csv file for a mail-merge – so one at a time was not too helpful!
I found this tool at http://www.inter-help.com/toolbox/aaron that will convert as many files as you want from a zip folder into a single csv.
Fantastic tool.
Enjoy!

The wireless card Intel Pro 3945ABG on a Thinkpad T60 stopped working after the latest Windows XP Update. It showed as “working properly” in my hardware profile but neither the Windows Network Tool or the IBM / Intel Network Manager could pick it up and the Fn+F5 combination couldn’d switch the wireless back on. If you are a techy you know what to do next…. reinstall the device. Here are the steps if you need it.

1 – Go to START>ControlPanel>System
2 – Click on the “Hardware” tab then “Device Manager”
3 – Click on “Network Adapters” (to expand it) and then select the Wireless card (in my case the Intel Pro 3945ABG)
4 – Right Click on the wireless card and select uninstall from the pop-up menu.
5 – After uninstalling click on Action>Scan for Harware Changes and your device will be found and reinstalled
6 – Restart your computer and it should all work.

Got this error a couple of times already on Windows XP. The system goes through the startup and then shows a blue screen for 1/2 second and reboots. I’ve then been to a few forums in order to get it fixed so I decided, for personal reasons to post here the route that worked for me.

First: Stop the “Reboot on system failure”
– Start the computer and press F8 just before the windows screen appears (just after POST)
– Press F8 again to get more startup options (if only one option is shown – read screen for instructions)
– Select the option “Disable Reboot on System Failure”
– System will then try to boot and halt on the blue screen of death, which contains your error message

ERROR c0000128 – Registry Error
– My error was related to a Software entry on the Registry, to fix it I followed the instructions on the Miscrosoft Support website. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

I recently gave my old powerbook to my sister in law. I had a lot of information on it and so I planned to transfer all my files and do a clean install. One problem the dvd drive on my old powerbook is broken. It would continually spit the installation disk out. Fortunately I have another mac which was able to help with this.

So how do I install OS X when the dvd drive is broken?

1. Connect the two Macs by firewire cable. One will be the host for the DVD drive and one will be the target which you will install OS X onto.

2. Start up the target computer you plan to install OS X on in target mode by holding down T when you restart the computer. This will mount the target computer as a hard drive on the host computer.

3. Put the OS X installation disk into the Mac that is your host computer.

4. You can now either open the installer on the DVD which will prompt you to restart the host computer. Or you can simply restart and hold down C which will force the Mac to startup from the DVD.

5. Once you have started up from the installer DVD follow through the normal steps. You will then arrive at the option to choose the destination. Select the hard drive of the target computer. You will probably have to change the options if you are not doing an upgrade.

6. Once you have finished the installation shut down the host computer and disconnect the firewire cable. You can now restart the target computer which will startup with a newly installed OS X.

*Note: If you are installing OS X 10.3 (panther) or earlier you can not use an intel based mac to use as the host computer. Both the target and host computers will need to be powerpc based and vice versa if you are installing on an intel based mac.

If you have a small site or a blog and want to create regular backups, you could use your Gmail account for that, but lets say it starts to clog up your inbox or even worse it starts to use up your storage space. A friend of mine does it brilliantly. A filter (rule) on Gmail will delete the email with the backup on arrival and it then gets stored in your Bin therefore not using your inbox space and storage capability while keeping it accessible for 30 days. If your site is updated daily you could even have a daily backup.

In a nutshell here is how you do it.

Setup a backup cronjob on your CPanel - send backup to you Gmail account

on Gmail, go to Settings > Filters

create a new filter From: <your server’s email address> – to know it you need to check the backup email you’ve just received from the cronjob.

on the next step select the options “Skip the Inbox” and “Delete it”

select also “apply to # conversations below” – it will apply the filter (rule) to any existing backup you already have in your inbox

You can hide the Google Ads on your personal page in Ning. Ning is a Social Networking platform where you can create your own Social Networking site. Well you could say it’s mean to hide the ads that will generate income for the creators and I sympathize with that but let me tell why I want to hide them. I joined a Social Networking created by a Christian Friend and during my first few visits I caught a few ads that were not quite appropriate for the content of the group, one of them being “Married Dating”, not sure I want to advertise that on a Christian Social Network – or anywhere else. Anyway excuses apart, here is how you do it (based on your own conscience).

Log on to your ning site and click on “My Page”

click on “Customize appearance”

Scroll down and click on the Advanced tab

add the following text to the textarea available

.xg_ads { height:0px; width:0px;  }
.xg_module { background:#FAF7D8; }

change #FAF7D8 to the background color of your template – if you change the template you will need to change this line also

Done

Now you do this based on your own conscience, I’m just sharing my tips, Im’ not talking you into doing this .

This error happens when the php5-imap extension hasn’t been installed. After searching for sometime I found a reference to php5-imap and decided to give it a try. Here is how you install it under Debian (ubuntu), very simple.

1- as root #apt-get install php5-imap (a blue screen will ask if you want to install it without maildir support – if all you need it for is SugarCRM click yes)

2 – restart Apache – #/etc/init.d/apache2 restart

Upgrading SugarCRM Community Edition from 4.5 to 5.0 is supposed to be a walk in the park, and if you do have the right settings it will be. As in IT everything depends on the little details, SugarCRm wouldn’t be different. Don’t get me wrong I really like SugarCRM that’s why I post errors and “workarounds” here.

While upgrading from version 4.5 to 5.o, using the option to upload from local file, after clicking the upload upgrade button the page would hang for a while and then take me back to the home page without any error message. I checked the installation, checked my PHP.ini and the upload size limit was set to 40M as instructed during the installation. Then I look in more detail at my PHP.ini and noticed that post_limit = 8M… mmm …. stupid detail overlooked and I’m sure I’m not the only one. I increased it to 40M and the upgrade moved very smoothly.

Here is how you do it:

Under Linux (do it as Root or use sudo if applicable)

1 – Open PHP.ini # vi /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini

2 – Scroll down until you see the line post_size_limit = 8M (change 8 to 40)

3 – restart Apache #/etc/init.d/apache2 restart

(the vi editor opens as read-only, to enable editing press “i”, to disable editing press “esc”, to save (write) press “:w” (editing needs to be disabled for this) and to exit “:q” )

While moving a SugarCRM installation to a different server I found this problem – “MySQL not available”. Firstly I had a blank page and then decide to re-run the installation script. During the system check it listed MySQL as not available, so I checked for the status of the mysql server and it was running. (as root – /etc/init.d/mysql status)

This problem is caused by PHP not being able to talk to the MySQL server. Here are some simple steps that can help you resolve this.

1 – add the line extension=mysql.so to the end of your php.ini ( found under /etc/php5/apache2)

2 - restart the apache server – /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

This should resolve your problem but if it does not, like in my case, the php-mysql extension is missing so you need to install it.

3 – in a Debian based distro (Like Ubuntu) just use apt-get install php-mysql to install it (as root or use sudo before the command)

4 – restart the apache server – /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

This is it!
